Shanghai Grain enterprises have a long history. Rice milling, flour milling, oil squeezing and brewing (catsup workshop) appeared long time ago. The ancient instruments such as stone mortars, stone mills and catsup jars have been used for thousands of years.
The U.K. merchants founded the Deli Mill in 1863. It was the first machinery mill run by foreign funds. Hongsheng Rice Store was the first one to grind the rice by machine. Yutaiheng Flour Workshop started to operate in 1882. It was the first machinery mill founded by Chinese merchants. U.K. Major Brothers' Company founded Shanghai Oil Mill in 1892. American merchants set up Meichang Machinery Rice Mill in 1895, which was the first machinery rice mill in Shanghai. Mr. Shen Xuanhuai founded Dade Machinery Oil Mill in 1896, which was the beginning of machinery oil squeezing in China. German merchants founded Zengyu Machinery Flour Mill in 1897, which was the first machinery flourmill using steam power in China. Mr. Sun Duosen, with his brother Sun Duoxing, founded Bufeng Flourmill and set up Bufeng Machinery Flour Corporation in Shanghai in 1900--. It is the first machinery flourmill founded by domestic capital. China Machinery Flour Trading Institute was founded in 1908 (it was reorganized into Shanghai Machinery Exchange Institute). Rong Zongjing with his brother Rong Desheng set up Fuxin No. 1 Flourmill in 1913, and they also founded six flourmills successively during the following ten years. Fuxin Flourmill became the largest flour corporation in China. Bufeng Flourmill built new factory and became the largest machinery flourmill with the best equipment in the Far East in 1929. China Vegetable Oils manufacturer was founded in 1936.
Shanghai was liberated on May 28, 1949. The Trade Department of Finance, Economy and Trade Committee of Shanghai Military Control Commission declared to take over the rice mill of Shanghai on May 30 of the same year . It took over No.1 and No.2 vegetable oil manufacturer and refinery the next day (it was renamed as China Vegetable Oils Corporation in August of the same year). Shanghai Grain Company was founded officially on July 27 of the same year (it was reorganized into Huadong Branch of China Grain Company the next year). Shanghai Grain Retails Corporation was founded in April 1950. China Grain Company Shanghai Branch was founded in December 1950.
Bufeng Flourmill and Fuxin Flourmill combined together and renamed State-private Jointly Operated Bufeng-Fuxin Flourmill in November 1956 . Shanghai Cereals & Oils Company was founded in December 1958. Shanghai Oil and Salt Company was founded in July 1960. Supplying Department of Shanghai Grain Bureau and Supplying and Planning Departments of Shanghai Oil and Salt Company were combined into Shanghai Grain Supply Company in August 1962. Bufeng-Fuxin Flourmill was renamed Shanghai Flourmill in September 1966. Shanghai Flour Company was founded in December 1984. Shanghai Cereals & Oil Trade Company and Shanghai Cereals, Oil and Foodstuffs Trade Center were founded successively during the period from November to December of the same year. Both of them run the management systems of board of directors.
Shanghai Grain Supply Company and Shanghai Cereals and Oils Trade Company combined their offices and worked together in 1986. Shanghai Grain and Oil Integrated Trade Market opened in April 1993. Shanghai Grain and Oil Commodity Exchange, which was jointly operated by Internal Trade Department and Shanghai Municipal Government, operated on a trial basis on June 30 of the same year .
According to the spirit of the documents issued by local government on deepening the reform of the grain circulation system, and with the state-owned backbone grain companies as its main body , Shanghai Liangyou (Group) Co., Ltd. was founded in August 1998 . All companies under the direct control of the former Shanghai Grain Bureau were shifted to the umbrella of Shanghai Liangyou (group) Co., Ltd .
After the foundation of Liangyou Group, it actively deepens the reform of grain companies to accelerate its development. It prioritizes on the development of cereal, oil and foodstuffs industry. A range of flour, oils, rice and foodstuffs processing companies, with a relatively large scale, advanced technology and normative management, are set up. The company has set up several brand products on cereals and oils, such as Ħ°LehuiĦħ, Ħ°HaishiĦħ, Ħ°XuequeĦħ, Ħ°WeiduĦħ and the etc. It accelerates the development of modern cereal distribution center and constructs the largest facilities for cereals and oils' storage and distribution. It develops chain-store industry. The convenience stores with the brand Ħ°BuddiesĦħ amounts to more than 700 ones, and are developing nationwide.
